A forest fire broke out on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy over the weekend and destroyed several hectares

The fire brigades in Angera in the province of Varese have been fighting the flames since Friday evening. Several families had to leave their homes and, according to the Ansa news agency, were initially unable to return on Saturday.

Two helicopters and three firefighting aircraft were deployed on the border between the Lombardy and Piedmont regions, as reported by the fire brigade. According to local TV broadcaster Rete55, the fire was under control shortly before Saturday noon.
The cause of the fire was initially unknown. There shouldn’t be any injuries. Recently there have also been repeated large forest fires on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore, which were favored among other things by the remarkably dry conditions. Areas in the Swiss canton of Ticino were affected. (dpa)
