The fire started on Wednesday of unknown cause at a former military training camp near Jüterbog, a place about 60 kilometers southwest of Berlin.
Firefighting planes on the ground
Over the past few days, the fire brigade has tried everything to extinguish the fire. For example, two firefighting planes were deployed, but they later remained on the ground because, according to a fire service spokesman, dropping water was not enough.
Firefighters were also unable to enter the forest due to the risk of exploding ammunition. Water is sprayed on the fire from a distance. At least ten tankers are busy getting enough water into the forest.
The fire service is currently hoping for less wind and rain, a spokesman said. The fire is now burning on about 35 hectares.
Europe is getting ready
In the meantime, there are also fears in other places in Europe for a summer with many forest fires. The European Union is therefore doubling the number of firefighting aircraft and helicopters to help EU countries. The EU will soon be able to deploy not 13, but 28 extinguishers in total to fight wildfires.
More than 400 firefighters are also posted in France, Portugal and Greece. They are then ready to take action. “In a forest fire, every second counts,” a responsible European Commissioner told the ANP today. “The more time it takes, the harder it is to put out the fire.”
