A forest fire of considerable size began during the early hours of this Sunday, March 31, on a hill near the city of Santiago de Cuba, so alarms have gone off in the homes closest to the incident.
According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the flames started on the hill known as “El Chucho”, located adjacent to the Micro 7 Reparto.
“A hill that adjoins homes in the Micro 7 District in Santiago de Cuba is on fire at this time of day,” the communicator indicated on Facebook shortly before 1:00 am.
Eyewitnesses confirmed the situation, pointing out that, at that time, the Island’s fire department still did not appear in the affected area. A recording shared by the journalist shows the magnitude of the fire, with the flames being visible from a great distance.
Among the comments, several citizens who live near the incident were concerned about the situation, highlighting the absence of the Castro authorities.
“The firefighters have not been able to put out the incident and the fire continues to gain ground,” wrote a Facebook user.
Others noted shortly after that firefighters usually arrived quickly in the city, however, there was no direct path to the fire, so they did not enter the forest to try to put out the fire.
Some Internet users indicated that these types of accidents are very common on the hill, but social networks have made it easier to find out what is happening around the country.
“I worked at Micro 7 for fourteen years and that hill was always getting hotter. I don’t know if accidentally or intentionally” and “It’s normal, it always happens. What before is that there were no social networks nor did they have a telephone,” some of the users said.
Until the time of writing this note, the independent journalist had not updated the situation, so it is unknown how far the flames have advanced in the last few hours.
