Forest Fire at Saint-Goazec: Firefighters Battle Blaze in Fir Forest

Since around 4:30 p.m., a fire has been underway in the town of Saint-Goazec, at a place called Kaliforn, this Wednesday, June 7, 2023. It is a fire that took place in a fir forest (fir forest) . The departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis 29) deployed three forest fire intervention groups (Gif). They are being reinforced by a GIF from Morbihan. Two other Gif are approaching in case of need for relief. In total, a hundred firefighters from several surrounding barracks (South and Center-Finistère) are mobilized to try to control the flames in this wooded and difficult to access place. Thick smoke was emerging from the place around 5:45 p.m.

Less than five hectares burned at 7 p.m.

Air reinforcement has been requested and drones are already on site. In addition, a staff relay is already planned for this night.

At 7 p.m., less than five hectares had burned, said the Finistère prefecture in a press release, specifying that “no dwelling is threatened” in this sector near Châteauneuf-du-Faou. “The fire is fixed on his left flank. The firefighters are fighting against its spread on the right flank, ”adds the prefecture.

Traffic interrupted

The gendarmes partially blocked the roads to the path leading to the locality. Traffic is interrupted on the axis between Croas Janus and Toul Ar C’haz.

The causes of the fire are not yet known, but this sector, close to the Monts d’Arrée, is particularly exposed to the risk of fire starting, especially during hot weather.

The prefect of Finistère invites the population to avoid the sector and to respect the prohibitions put in place so as not to hinder the work of the forces involved.
