Forest Department report reveals vision loss in one eye of wild elephant Arikomban in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Kochi: A report by the Forest Department has revealed that the right eye of a wild elephant called Arikomban, which was caught from Chinnakanal and released in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, is missing. This is clarified in the report submitted by the Forest Department in the High Court. The report also states that this was realized when the GPS collar was worn. Injuries were also found on the trunk. The report also states that medicine has been given for it. The forest department also informed the court that they are keeping a special watch on Arikomban.

While the High Court was considering the cane issue today, the court had asked the forest department whether there is a possibility of the cane coming back. The elephant is likely to come back in search of food and water. Therefore, the High Court has directed that surveillance should be strengthened.

Meanwhile, the court expressed satisfaction with the Arikomban mission and congratulated the participants in the mission. Justice AK Jayasankaran Nambiar gave a letter of appreciation to the mission team members. The letter said that it was a humanitarian sign that the team members carried out the mission safely and compassionately.

Meanwhile, the signal from Arikomban’s radio collar, which was lost, was recovered. The signal was received from about 10 places. The information from the signal is that the elephant has traveled through the border forest. At present, the millet is located in Mullakudy on the Tamil Nadu border.
