Forensic researchers from the University of Liège will investigate the remains of Saint Lambertus, the last bishop of Maastricht.
The reliquary, a box in which the bones of Lambertus van Maastricht are kept, was opened last week. The bones were in four glass jars in a red box. The box also contained documents with descriptions of previous moments when it was opened. This happened in 1896, 1938 and 1985, among others, it reports diocese of Liège.
For the first time medical examination
The bishop’s remains have never been medically examined. The researchers hope to learn more about his life. The investigation focuses mainly on the skull cap, which, according to the coroner, is in poor condition.
The skull turned out to be wrapped in material that is normally used to close jam jars. The skull has become deformed as a result, but the scientists are hopeful that they will still be able to draw sufficient conclusions from their research.
Killed with sword
Lambertus was the last bishop of the diocese of Maastricht. The seat was moved to Liège at the beginning of the eighth century, writes 1Limburg.
Bishop Lambertus was probably murdered with a sword around the year 705. It is not certain why exactly. It probably had to do with his aversion to an extramarital affair with a servant. He is therefore still venerated as a martyr by the church.
Many churches in the Brabant Kempen and North Limburg are named after him.
