While the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) was discussing with its allies the leaking of “secret” documents containing military information on many current issues, especially the Ukraine war, and their publication on social media, the Ministry of Justice launched a judicial investigation into the leak.
The scandal of leaking documents bearing the coat of arms of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, containing up-to-date military and intelligence information on important issues, including the Ukraine-Russia war and the activities of intelligence regarding the Russian, Chinese and Iranian nuclear program, is growing.
“The Department of Defense continues to review and evaluate the validity of photographic documents circulating on social media sites that appear to contain classified and highly confidential information,” the Pentagon said in a written statement. An interagency study has been initiated that focuses on assessing the impact on our national security and our allies.” statements were included.
In the statement, which was stated that the US administration informed the relevant committees of the Congress, it was stated that the administration also communicated with the allied countries.
In the statement, it was informed that the Ministry of Justice has also launched a judicial investigation on the issue.
It is stated that the leaks on Twitter and Russian Telegram channels are as important as the 2010 WikiLeaks scandal, in which US diplomatic cryptos were leaked, and the Snowden crisis in 2013, when digital surveillance activities were leaked.
Despite the WikiLeaks and Snowden disclosures, many American experts point out that the importance of the new leak comes from the fact that the shared documents contain up-to-date information.
TENS OF PAGES OF DOCUMENTS LEAK
It is stated that the leaked documents were actually shared on Discord and Telegram in February and March, but it was just noticed.
While the documents that emerged on April 7 mainly contain details about the Ukraine-Russia war, the posts that emerged over the weekend also include topics such as the activities of the US intelligence in the war, the US monitoring of Iran and China, and the listening of the talks of some allies.
In the leaks, it is stated that the current intelligence summaries of the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) operations center are quite critical.
In these documents, it was revealed that the CIA made high-level wiretaps in many allied countries, especially high-level officials of the Israeli intelligence agency MOSSAD and South Korea’s National Security Council.
On the other hand, in the documents, which included information about the US placing intelligence sources in Russian institutions, it was seen that American intelligence officers penetrated to the top levels of the Russian army and had enough control over the internal information flow to be able to predict attacks on Ukraine.
One of the leaked pages contains information from US intelligence that the Russian Ministry of Defense is making plans to attack two positions of Ukrainian troops in February, and that Russian military planners are preparing to attack more than ten energy facilities and bridges in Ukraine.
In the leaked documents, it was also seen that evaluations were made about the geopolitical consequences of the war in Ukraine.
In the synopsis of the CIA’s leaked daily World Intelligence Review, it is stated that the attacks carried out by Ukraine deep inside Russia’s territory will be seen by China as an “opportunity to show NATO as the aggressor” and Beijing may increase its support for Russia by citing this.
The documents also show that Washington closely follows Iran’s efforts to obtain nuclear weapons.
RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR
The documents, which emerged on April 7, contained many details such as the analysis of the course of the Russia-Ukraine war, as well as the aid given by the allied countries and the timetable for these aids to reach the field.
While the documents labeled “confidential” included information including the average ammunition consumption of artillery and rocket systems, it was evaluated that this information could be used by Russian intelligence.
In a document listing Ukrainian military units, equipment and training, it was stated that 12 Ukrainian brigades have been prepared so far, of which 9 have been trained by the United States and other NATO allies.
In the same document, it was stated that 6 of the 9 brigades in question would be ready by 31 March and the rest by 30 April and that 250 tanks and 350 mechanized vehicles were needed for these 9 brigades.
Although it was said that the documents were mostly genuine, it was also claimed that some of the contents of the documents might have been changed in order to show the loss of troops in Ukraine more and the loss of Russia less.
