LONDON (Reuters) – British Foreign Minister Liz Truss will become Britain’s chief negotiator with the European Union on the Northern Irish protocol following the resignation of Brexit Minister David Frost, announced Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office on Sunday.

Britain officially left the EU earlier this year but the two sides are in talks to resolve difficulties over trade relations between Britain and Northern Ireland, a British province that shares a land border with Ireland, a member country of the Union.

David Frost, one of the main architects of Boris Johnson’s Brexit policy, resigned on Saturday over disagreements over government strategy.

His departure raised questions about the future tone of the discussions between London and Brussels.

“Truss will take ministerial responsibility for the UK’s relationship with the European Union with immediate effect (…) and will lead the ongoing negotiations to resolve the issues that arose in the implementation of the Northern Irish Protocol “, said the cabinet.

Following the announcement, Maros Sefcovic, Vice President of the European Commission said on Twitter (NYSE :): “My team and I will continue to cooperate with the UK with the same constructive mindset. on all major works to come including the protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland “.

David Frost negotiated this protocol, which is part of Britain’s exit agreement from the European Union. It was signed by the government of Boris Johnson before he reneged on it.

Former trade minister who became foreign minister in September, Liz Truss is popular with activists of the ruling Conservative Party.

A great user of social networks and considered one of the possible candidates for Boris Johnson’s succession, she had supported the “Remain” during the 2016 referendum on Great Britain’s membership of the European Union but she is has since become a supporter of Brexit.

The two parties are due to resume their discussions in January on a whole series of subjects including customs controls as well as controls on agri-food products transiting between Great Britain and its province.
