Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi meets with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Islamamad, Pakistan
The second meeting took place on the sidelines of the Ministerial Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Some of the agendas that were discussed included the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, education and women’s empowerment.
“Meeted with the representative of the Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaqi in Islamabad (18/12) and discussed the humanitarian situation, education and women’s empowerment,” Minister Retno said in a tweet on her personal Twitter account, quoted on Sunday (12/19/2021).
Previously, President Jokowi highlighted the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan due to an inclusive government that has not materialized.
In this regard, the Indonesian government will also provide assistance to the Afghan people.
This was stated by the President when speaking virtually at the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit Retreat Session at the Bogor Presidential Palace, Friday, November 26, 2021.
“Currently, inclusive governance has not materialized. The humanitarian situation is deteriorating. Around 23 million Afghans are threatened with a food crisis. Humanitarian assistance is a priority. We are committed to providing assistance, including capacity assistance,” said President Jokowi.
Apart from humanitarian issues, there are two issues that are of concern to Indonesia. First, empowering women. President Jokowi reminded that respect for women’s rights is one of the promises of the Taliban.
In this regard, Indonesia wants to contribute so that this promise can be fulfilled, among others through the Indonesia-Afghanistan Women Solidarity Network which will be used for cooperation in empowering women in the future.
Second, cooperation between scholars. President Jokowi fully understands the important role of ulama in society. In 2018 Indonesia hosted a trilateral meeting of Afghanistan-Pakistan-Indonesian ulama to support the peace process.
“Even though the situation in Afghanistan is different, the ulama still play an important role. We are ready to facilitate dialogue between the ulama, including the Afghan clerics,” he said.
