The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Marc Garneau, spoke today with the United States Secretary of State, Mr. Antony Blinken.
Minister Garneau and Secretary Blinken discussed continued progress on Canada’s and United States’ core priority of ending the COVID-19 pandemic, as outlined in the Roadmap for a Renewed Partnership United States – Canada.
They also took stock of progress on other key priorities set out in the Roadmap and expressed their continued commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion, strengthening defense and security and holding a leaders’ summit. of North American states.
Minister Garneau and Secretary Blinken also agreed to continue to work closely together and coordinate efforts for a secure and sustainable reopening of the Canada-US border.
Minister Garneau expressed Canada’s great concern at the current level of insecurity in Haiti and stressed the importance of fostering lasting peace and security and of encouraging Haiti to develop a credible plan for democratic renewal, including the holding of elections by the end of the year. Minister Garneau also reaffirmed Canada’s continued commitment to Haiti, including helping the country meet current security and governance challenges. Minister Garneau and Secretary Blinken agreed to work together to support the Haitian people in developing a more stable, democratic and prosperous future.
Minister Garneau and Secretary Blinken reaffirmed their commitment to securing the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who have been arbitrarily detained in China since December 2018.
Meanwhile, Minister Garneau and Secretary Blinken discussed the need to relaunch efforts towards a two-state solution and address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. They discussed the recent visit of Minister Garneau to the Middle East and agreed to work with regional partners and the international community for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
