Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s Plane Stuck in Rio on the Way to New York: Captain Suspects Brazilian Obstacles

On the way from Rio de Janeiro to New York, Annalena Baerbock’s plane suddenly got stuck in Rio. The captain suspected that “the Brazilians are putting obstacles in our way.” This is not the Foreign Minister’s first flight mishap.

the essentials in brief

  • After the meeting of the G-20 foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro, Foreign Minister Baerbock wanted to travel on to New York.

  • But first the government Airbus had to be refueled and then the plane was not given clearance.

  • “In 40 years of flight service, I have never experienced anything like this,” said the captain.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock once again suffered a delay in one of her flights abroad. The Green politician originally wanted to leave for New York on Thursday (February 22) at around 5:30 p.m. (CET) from the meeting of the G20 foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

First there was a delay because the government Airbus A350-900 on standby still had to be refueled. After refueling was completed at around 6:30 p.m., the flight captain had to continue to ask the minister for patience.

“In 40 years of flight service, I have never experienced anything like this.”

It “seems like the worm is in there today,” said the captain. “We are currently trying to get clearance to start the flight to New York. But the Brazilians are somehow putting obstacles in our way today.” At the moment it seems that clearance for departure will only be given in 30 to 40 minutes at the earliest. “I can’t tell you why that is. In 40 years of flight service, I’ve never experienced anything like that. I’m sorry.”

I’ve often had problems with flights

The plane finally took off at around 7 p.m. for the nine-hour flight to New York. There, Baerbock planned, among other things, to speak at meetings of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council on the second anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine this Friday (February 23).

Baerbock had to make an unplanned stopover on a trip to East Africa in January. Because there was no overflight permit for Eritrea, their plane had to turn around on the way from Berlin to Djibouti in East Africa and land in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
