Foreign journalists have already shared their impressions of the new Mac Studio 2023.
In general, they were satisfied with the new product and praised it for its very quiet operation. At the same time, the M2 Ultra chip outperformed many analogues on other platforms.

Journalists CNET one of the first to collect impressions from Mac Studio 2023.
Overall, the computer delivers about 20% better performance than the equivalent M1 chip, and thanks to the upgraded Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, it has more stable and potentially much faster wireless connectivity. The updated HDMI 2.1 supports 4K monitors with a refresh rate of 240Hz.
Compared to cheaper versions, there are two additional Thunderbolt ports.
In terms of performance, we tested different versions of Mac Studio. The 38-core GPU in the M2 Max delivers about 20% better Metal performance compared to the 32-core GPU in the M1 Max, almost entirely due to the increased core count.
For reference, 38-core performance is roughly comparable to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti in at least one cross-platform test (3D Mark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited), but there are plenty of metrics that just don’t show up in this test.
The 76-core version of the M2 Ultra should deliver slightly lower performance than the RTX 4070 Ti. Here are some results:
I’ve only had a few days to test the system, so I’m still sorting out the various performance nuances. However, even now I can conclude that this is an excellent powerful system that secured such a status last year.

Without a doubt, the M2 Ultra is the most powerful Apple Silicon processor ever. Consisting of two M2 Max processors connected by Apple’s UltraFusion architecture, it is manufactured on a second-generation 5nm process by Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC.
The M2 Ultra is made up of 24 CPU cores and 60 or 76 GPU cores, and has 800 GB of memory bandwidth. I was pleased that the new Mac Studio has support for VRR (variable refresh rate).
We compared the new computer with Windows counterparts: HP Z2 Mini G9 and Lenovo ThinkStation P620. The Z2 Mini G9 was tested with an Intel Core i9-12900K, 64GB of RAM and an Nvidia RTX A2000 GPU.
Meanwhile, the ThinkStation P620 came with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX, 128GB of RAM, and a higher-end Nvidia RTX A-series GPU. In Cinebench R23, Mac Studio outperformed the previous model with the M1 Ultra by almost 18%—close to a claimed 20% increase from
Apple. However, the ThinkStation P620 doubled that figure, reflecting the huge core advantage of the Threadripper Pro chip.
In Geekbench 5.4.1 Pro, the M2 Ultra gained 17% over the M1 Ultra in single-core and multi-core modes, respectively, by 17% and 27%. The “machine” from HP lags behind the Apple computer.
In 3DMark Wildlife Extreme, the increase in graphics performance was 24%. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, the chip delivered 170 FPS.
Here are some more results from other popular programs:
However, it is worth considering that Mac Studio with the top-end M2 Ultra chip costs $8999. This is a lot.
Such a device is only for exceptionally demanding tasks. There are simpler versions starting at $3999.
