Foreign Employment in Korea Reaches Record High: 2023 Statistics Released

According to the ‘2023 Immigrant Status and Employment Survey Results’ announced by Statistics Korea on the 18th, as of last May, the number of foreigners residing in Korea over the age of 15 was 1.43 million, an increase of 129,000 (9.9%) from the previous year. There are 813,000 men (56.8%) and 617,000 women (43.2%).

By nationality, Vietnamese people increased by 32,000, and Chinese people also increased by 5,000. The number of Korean-Chinese decreased by 7,000.

By residency status, there was an increase compared to the previous year in non-professional employment (↑60,000 people) and international students (↑25,000 people), while there was a decrease in visiting employment (↓10,000 people) and marriage immigration (↓3,000 people). By age, people aged 15 to 29 (up 70,000 people), people in their 30s (up 33,000 people), and people over 60 (up 18,000 people).
While it increased compared to the previous year, it decreased in those in their 50s (↓5,000).

The domestic population of people over the age of 15 who have been granted naturalization within the past 5 years was 51,000, a decrease of 1,000 (2.5%↓) from the previous year, to 9,000 men (18.3%) and 42,000 women (81.9%). .

The economic participation rate of foreigners was 68.2%, up 0.6 percentage points (p) from the previous year, and the economically active population increased by 95,000 to 975,000.

The employment rate was 64.5%, down 0.3 percentage points from the previous year, but the number of employed people increased by 80,000 to 923,000.

By residency status, there was an increase compared to the previous year in non-professional employment (↑60,000 people), professionals (↑5,000 people), and international students (↑5,000 people), but there was a decrease in visiting employment (↓9,000 people).

By industry, there was an increase compared to the previous year in mining and manufacturing (↑42,000 people) and agriculture, forestry and fishing (↑15,000 people), while there was a decrease in electricity, transportation, communications, and finance (↓1,000 people).

The unemployment rate was 5.4%, up 1.2 percentage points from the previous year, and the number of unemployed people was 52,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous year. The economically inactive population was 455,000, an increase of 33,000 from the previous year.

By wage level, the most common foreign workers were between 2 and 3 million won (442,000 people), followed by over 3 million won (313,000 people).

It was confirmed that the largest route for foreign wage earners to obtain job information when changing jobs was through introductions from family, friends, or relatives (46.2%). Additionally, 3.2% of foreign wage earners experienced injuries while working in the past year, and the main cause of injuries was mistakes (59.0%).

The largest proportion of foreigners’ average monthly total income over the past year was less than 2 to 3 million won (32.8%), while the largest proportion of those with naturalization permits was no income (29.9%).

Foreigners who remit money to family members or relatives living in countries other than Korea were 37.5%, and those with naturalization permission were 22.6%.

The nationalities of foreigners with non-professional employment were in the following order: Nepal (14.5%), Cambodia (14.5%), and Vietnam (11.9%). The reasons why they chose Korea as an overseas employment destination were high wages (72.2%) and good working environment (10.2%).

The nationality of foreign students with residency status was Vietnam (38.3%), China (27.7%), and Uzbekistan (6.4%). The reasons for studying in Korea were because the educational curriculum was excellent (30.0%), and because the major in Korea matched well with the field of interest (21.9%).
