Foreign Affairs calls on Belgians to leave Iran as soon as possible due to increased risks of arbitrary detention

“Any Belgian visitor, including binationals, is exposed to a high risk of arrest, arbitrary detention and unfair trial. This risk also affects people who simply go on a tourist trip to Iran. In the event of arrest or detention, respect for fundamental rights and personal safety are not guaranteed,” they explained.

Since 24 February, a Belgian aid worker has been detained in Iran in inhuman and degrading conditions. He was sentenced 15 days ago to 28 years’ imprisonment for reasons that remain unclear without having been able to benefit from a fair trial.
