FÖRDERWERK: U19 loses to Fortuna Düsseldorf

15. August 2024

Hohenberg team loses 0-3.

The A-Juniors of Rot-Weiss Essen are still waiting for their first away points in the new U19 DFB junior league. The oldest team from the FÖRDERWERK lost 0:3 (0:1) to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the third preliminary round match of Group C. Thanks to goals from Anas Slimani (24th), Adrijan Pesa (69th) and Maksym Len (90th+3), coach Simon Hohenberg’s team also came away empty-handed in their second away match. After the yellow-red cards for Pierre Rogasik (58th/repeated foul play) and Nicolai Schulte-Kellinghaus (87th/foul play), the Rot-Weiss were also down by two players in the final phase.

In contrast to the success in the Lower Rhine Cup final two months ago against Fortuna (3:2), the match took place under different circumstances, as both teams now have different players on the pitch due to their age. The Düsseldorf team got off to a much better start. “We completely slept through the first 20 minutes,” complained RWE coach Simon Hohenberg.

“We made careless mistakes in the build-up and sometimes played the ball into Fortuna’s feet. So we had a few good chances against us in the early stages,” said the 37-year-old. “After we conceded the goal, the game calmed down a bit. We came out of the half-time break with a lot of energy.” Offensive player Yan Marcos Friessner Montas had a good opportunity to equalize.

Instead, the Red-Whites were outnumbered after almost an hour when Pierre Rogasik was sent off. “For me, that wasn’t a yellow-red card. Pierre was a little late in the tackle, but he also played the ball. I don’t know whether both actions that led to the sending off should be punished with a yellow card,” said the RWE coach angrily.

Fortuna then managed to maintain their lead “before we gave away the second goal,” as Hohenberg complained. After the second sending off, Düsseldorf finally increased the score to the final score. “I didn’t like the performance. We have a few points ahead of us that we need to analyze in detail,” announced the U19 coach. The red and white A juniors will host SC Preußen Münster at home on Sunday (from 11 a.m.). Ben Berzen, who missed the match in Düsseldorf at short notice due to illness, may also be back in the game.
