Ford Patents Transformable Trunk Lid to Rival Tesla Cybertruck Design

The automaker has patented a transformable trunk lid for its pickup truck, which could now look just like the Tesla Cybertruck.

The Tesla Cybertruck features a radical design unlike anything else. When the car was first introduced (in November 2019), many wondered: how come we didn’t think of this before?

The Cybertruck is primarily an angular design, but it also boasts many innovative features. One of them is an unusual roof. It can withstand weight up to 136 kilograms, making it the most durable in its segment. Elon Musk himself climbed up there and started jumping during the Jay Leno show.

Now Ford Motor Company has filed a patent that could make the F-150 look a little like the Tesla Cybertruck. All commercial Fords are shaped like a brick, making them the sworn enemies of aerodynamics. For electric vehicles, this means a shorter range. For cars with internal combustion engines, this leads to almost the same thing as higher fuel consumption.

The convertible folding skin that Ford wants to create is specifically designed to move air away from the body and reduce drag, allowing for better efficiency.

The aero tonneau skin consists of three triangular shaped panels. The system will include a center section that will remain in the luggage compartment, enclosing the cargo area, while the sides will rise to help reduce aerodynamic drag. This air deflection solution will reduce the number of sharp edges. The panels will rise or fall depending on the speed of movement.

The application states that durable materials such as polymer, fiberglass, aluminum and composites will be used to make the cover.
