Ford Mustang GTD Sets New record at Nürburgring: The Fastest American Production Car
The Ford Mustang GTD has made history by becoming the fastest American production car to conquer the legendary Nürburgring track in Germany. Driven by Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Miller, the Mustang GTD completed the 20.8-kilometer lap in an extraordinary 6 minutes and 57.685 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by the Dodge Viper ACR by 4.3 seconds.
This milestone not only marks the Mustang GTD as the quickest American production car on the Nürburgring but also makes it the first vehicle produced in the U.S. to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time on this iconic track.
The Mustang GTD’s performance is nothing short of remarkable. It outpaced the Lamborghini Aventador SV and Ferrari 296 GTB, and even matched the porsche 918 Spyder’s lap time. Though, it still falls short of the record for front-engined production cars, held by the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which clocked in at 6:43.61 minutes in 2020.
The Ford team achieved this record back in August but chose to keep the accomplishment under wraps until recently. A video of the record-breaking lap was released on YouTube, showcasing the car’s impressive capabilities. The team emphasized the extensive two-year effort that whent into preparing the Mustang GTD for this historic achievement.
A Triumph for American Engineering
“We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished with the Mustang GTD,” said a Ford spokesperson. “this achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, and it reinforces the Mustang’s legacy as a performance icon.”
While the Mustang GTD’s performance is a critically important victory for American automotive engineering, it also highlights the ongoing competition with European supercars. Despite its impressive lap time, the Mustang GTD still trails the top European models in this category.
