Ford Motor Cuts Production of F-150 Lightning Electric Truck and Shifts Focus to Gasoline Models

American automakers say Bloomberg, after a two-year push to increase production volumes of electric vehicles, they are beginning to take a sober look at the prospects of the local market, and therefore are forced to reduce specialized programs. UBS analysts believe the US electric vehicle market will grow just 11% this year, down from 47% last year and 60% growth in 2022.

Starting April 1, Ford Motor decided to lay off 1,400 employees employed at the production of electric F-150 Lightning pickup trucks in Michigan, as the plant switches to single-shift operation. The production program for this model for this year has been reduced by half compared to the original level. Typically, Ford will attract additional labor to produce gasoline models. 700 people will be transferred from the production of electric pickups, and another 900 people will be hired again. Additional personnel will be involved in the production of Bronco SUVs and Ranger pickups with internal combustion engines, as well as their Raptor series modifications.

At the same time, Ford is halving the design capacity of a traction battery plant under construction in Michigan, and is also delaying the start of construction of a similar plant in Kentucky. The company’s management continues to believe that demand for electric vehicles will be driven by “certain categories of customers.”
