A total of 1,700 jobs are to be cut in Cologne and Aachen in development and 600 in administration. This was announced by Ford Europe boss Martin Sander on Tuesday morning. Aim is one “leaner, more competitive cost structure”, said the group. It was agreed that the site would be secured until 2032 and socially responsible job cuts through severance payments.
Around 14,000 people currently work for Ford in Cologne and around 200 in the Aachen research center.
Employees in a positive mood
After the works meeting, many Ford employees were relieved. An employee told the WDR that the positive outweighs the negative. The site is secured until 2032. In addition, there will be no redundancies. He has a positive feeling. Metin Özgür sees it that way too. He also works at Ford and says he was scared at the first works meeting a few weeks ago. He too is now optimistic about the future. “We believe that we can develop something here in Europe and we want to prove it. We will continue to work on it,” says Özgür. However, not all employees stay with the company.
Job cuts not only in Germany
Jobs will also be cut in Great Britain – 1,000 in production and 300 in administration. In the rest of Europe, 200 jobs are to be lost. Overall, Ford wants to reduce its workforce in Europe by 3,800 men and women.
