The custom of “ghost marriage” is prosperous in some parts of the mainland, coupled with the fact that there are many men and a few women, and women’s corpses can be sold. After the adoptive parents made up their minds, they contacted a family in Shanxi through 7 intermediaries such as Ding Shengli; the other party’s 21-year-old son died in a car accident. According to local custom, unmarried men must marry after death, otherwise the dead souls will bring misfortune to relatives. So as soon as the family heard about this, they rushed to Shaanxi to negotiate. After arriving, they were shocked to see that the woman was still alive, and the deal broke. Afterwards, an intermediary told Ding Shengli that as long as the girl died, the procedures were complete and she was placed in the hospital morgue, he could still persuade the man to come.
The next day, Ding Shengli bought a fake death certificate and drafted a power of attorney for voluntary marriage, which was signed by Chen Tiantian’s adoptive father, and he paid 20,000 yuan (about NT$86,000) to the other party; then, Chen Tiantian was carried into the taxi by her adoptive mother crying and embarked on a desperate road. It is reported that Ding Shengli and others originally planned to put the girl in the hospital morgue and let her freeze to death. During the process, the administrator discovered that she had to take her directly to Shanxi.
Fortunately, Ding Shengli and others encountered routine inspections in Shanxi, and the police on duty found that they were abnormal and promptly rescued Chen Tiantian. The case was heard by the court, and Ding Shengli and other intermediaries and Chen Tiantian’s adoptive parents were sentenced to 3 to 7 years in prison for intentional homicide.
