New York – The US business magazine “Forbes” has published its annual ranking of the highest-earning athletes in the world. The top 10 includes three soccer players, four basketball players, one boxer, one American footballer and one tennis player – Roger Federer.
The Swiss sports icon Roger Federer has not been seen on the court for a long time. But that didn’t stop him from earning $90.7 million between May 1, 2021 and May 1, 2022. Just $700,000 of that was prize money. Sponsoring money as a promoter for brands such as Uniqlo or Rolex make up a large part of Federer’s income, but the IPO of the sporting goods manufacturer On, in which Federer invested, has also paid off.
Top of the list and thus the successor to last year’s best earner, boxer Evan McGregor, is Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi. Success over the past 12 months has been modest, a tearful departure at Barcelona followed by just four league goals for Paris St. Germain and knockout in the Champions League in the round of 16. However, this was not reflected in Messi’s account: Forbes experts have projected his income at $ 130 million. (mc/pg)
