For World Coffee Day: 7 hymns to a hot drink – Culture

From Sinatra to Sabrina Carpenter: We have put together seven tasty songs about coffee – one of Mr and Mrs Schweizer’s favorite drinks. They’re guaranteed to wake you up.

Sabrina Carpenter: «Espresso» (2024)

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” goes down like oil – exgüsi, Kafi! The lyrics describe a woman who enchants a man so much that just the thought of her keeps him awake all night. Just like a strong espresso. The song promptly became a summer hit in 2024 – what else!?

Frank Sinatra: «The Coffee Song» (1946)

In addition to Sabrina, Sinatra also probably has a weakness for coffee – why else would Frank dedicate an entire song to the hot drink? In “The Coffee Song” he sings – perhaps already elated from two or three cups of the pick-me-up – about the seemingly endless amount of coffee in Brazil: “And when their ham and eggs need savor, coffee ketchup gives ’em flavor.”

Comedian Harmonists: “You suit me as well as sugar suits coffee” (1936)

Sugar with coffee? A no-go for many connoisseurs of cultivated coffee culture! The former Viennese group Comedian Harmonists sees things differently: In 1936, they sang the cheerful song “You suit me as well as sugar goes with coffee” – as mood-enhancing as a cappuccino for breakfast.

Beabadoobee: «Coffee» (2023)

A song by the singer Beabadoobee proves that the drink with K also affects the generation with Z. Thanks to the continuous loop on Tiktok and Co., “Coffee” stays at least as firmly in your head as the caffeine in your bloodstream. It’s not for nothing that Beabadoobee sings: “I’ll make a cup of coffee for your head”!

Bob Dylan: «One More Cup of Coffee» (1976)

In “One More Cup of Coffee,” Bob Dylan sings about unrequited love while – in keeping with the song’s title – longing for another cup of coffee. Is this an attempt to fill the void in his heart with caffeine? Or is Bob Dylan trying to tell us that love and coffee have one thing in common: it can only burn your fingers in the end. Ouch!

Travis Scott: «Coffee Bean» (2018)

What would coffee be without tea – i.e. without gossip? Rapper Travis Scott delivers the appropriate lyrics: In “Coffee Bean” the rapper sings about his relationship with Kylie Jenner. Travis is also self-critical and profound. The title “Coffee Bean” is a metaphor for alertness and the desire to see things more clearly – like after a cup of coffee. Sure so far?

Ella Fitzgerald: «Black Coffee» (1948)

Bittersweet: In “Black Coffee,” Ella Fitzgerald soothes the pain of her loneliness and longing for a lost love with pots of coffee. Her voice sounds as powerful as an espresso in the morning. Conclusion: Not a song for a casual coffee party.
