How much will car insurance cost in 2025? An important factor is the type class of your own car – this has now been recalculated for the coming year.
Repairs, maintenance, taxes and fuel (or electricity) – all of this makes driving a car expensive. And then of course there is the insurance: liability insurance is mandatory for every car – whether you also insure your vehicle with partial or fully comprehensive insurance depends on the age and value of the vehicle, among other things. The amount of the premium for the respective insurance is determined by several different factors. One of these is, for example, the regional classes, which are recalculated every yearAnother factor is the type classes that have now been defined for the year 2025.

Type class classification in car insurance: What this means
While the regional class classification is based on the damage and accident record of a specific region (the region in which the vehicle is registered), the type classes are based on the vehicle model. The logic behind this is very simple: if there are few accidents with a model and therefore relatively little damage, then the vehicle is classified in a low type class and the insurance premium is correspondingly low. If particularly expensive damage is caused with a vehicle type, the classification is correspondingly higher and the premium is more expensive.

Car insurance: New type classes for 12 million drivers
Next year, the type classes for more than 12 million drivers in Germany will change, as the General Association of Insurers (GDV) Around 7.1 million drivers are classified higher than in the previous year. In most cases, this is only a matter of moving up or down one type class, but for some models, it is more. Here are some examples:
High type class ratings for SUVs and luxury models
Generally rated very highly (without major changes in the coming year) are luxury vehicles and SUVs, for example in 2025 the Audi A8 3.0 TDI Quattro (third party insurance: 23, fully comprehensive insurance: 30), the Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 (22, 28), the Mercedes S350 CDI (23, 30), the Lexus RX 450H Hybrid AWD (21, 33) or the Range Rover Velar 20D AWD (24, 29).

Because small and inexpensive cars usually have relatively low repair costs, they are usually given a favorable rating in the type classes. Here are some vehicles that will be classified very low in 2025:
Type classes 2025: More favorable classifications for 5.1 million drivers
But not all drivers will necessarily have to pay more in the new year: 5.1 million drivers will be classified lower in the future – and can expect savings. By the way: The type class list of the GDV is not binding for insurers – however, most of them base their decisions on it.
If you would like to know how your car is classified in the type class, can find out on the GDV portalHowever, the regional and type classes are only two of the components that make up the amount of the insurance premiums. the annual kilometers driven and the owner himself play an important role. For example, increasing no-claims discounts can mean that the insurance costs for individual drivers can fall in the coming year despite a higher regional or type class.
