Born twenty years ago as a public administrative establishment, the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) already existed in an associative form present in Bron since 1998. This is where its Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes headquarters are located, among eight other regional offices in France.

For its actions, Inrap is placed under the dual supervision of the Ministries of Culture, Higher Education and Research.
