Born twenty years ago as a public administrative establishment, the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) already existed in an associative form present in Bron since 1998. This is where its Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes headquarters are located, among eight other regional offices in France.

For its actions, Inrap is placed under the dual supervision of the Ministries of Culture, Higher Education and Research.
Since the end of the 1970s, under the pressure of the scientific community which then practiced what was called “salvage excavations”, the awareness of political leaders has taken shape, slowly but surely, following the enthusiasm of the public.
