For those who suffer from a migraine, beware of fragmented sleep

Researchers at Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, conducted a study that revealed that people whose sleep was fragmented during the night was at greater risk of a migraine headache not the next day, but after two days.

The study published its results in the scientific journal (Neurology), during which the researchers explained that previous studies linked the lack of sleep and migraines, but the new study focused on the nuances of this link.

The research team monitored 98 adults whose average age was 35 years, to reach the results of the study, by recording diaries and measures of the objective form of sleep.

During the 6-week study, participants filled out their diaries about the hours they spent sleeping, in addition to migraine attacks, and their other healthy habits twice daily. Participants agreed to wear a wrist strap during this period, which is a device that records sleep patterns in real time.

Caffeine and tension

After considering other possible factors that could affect migraines, including caffeine, alcohol, and stress levels, the researchers reached some interesting conclusions.

The researchers found that sleeping 6 and a half hours and less increased the risk of migraines by 39 percent on the first day.
However, the researchers found that fragmented sleep, that is, intermittent sleep, was associated with an increased risk of migraine headaches, but not the next day directly, but on the second day.

“Our study revealed that fragmented sleep, which occurs when you wake up for a period during sleep periods, and then goes to sleep again, was associated with migraines not just the next day, but on the morning of the second day,” said Dr. Susan Bertech, leader of the research team. She added that “more research is needed to understand the clinical and neurobiological effects of segmentation of sleep and the risk of migraines.”

Peptic ulcer

Previous studies revealed that not getting enough sleep at night can increase the frequency of peptic ulcers in the elderly. She added that getting enough sleep at night, that is, 7 to 8 hours a day, improves the general health of the body and protects against diseases, especially obesity and kidney failure.

Migraines are considered to be the most common and most painful type of headache, and can be preceded or accompanied by warning and sensory signs such as the appearance of flashes during vision, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea and vomiting. In some cases, the effects of migraines extend to temporary cognitive impairment and skin pain, and the pain lasts from 4 hours to 3 days.

People with migraines tend to experience frequent headache attacks caused by a number of different factors, including stress, hormonal changes, bright lights, and food or sleep and diet deficiency.
