For this reason, the flags are flown at half-mast

In front of numerous buildings such as the town hall in Cologne, the flags will fly at half-mast on Friday. The NRW Ministry of the Interior has ordered mourning flags to be displayed. Behind this is an important anniversary.

In Cologne and throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, the flags will be at half-mast on Friday: Interior Minister Herbert Reul has ordered the so-called mourning flags. The occasion is the start of construction of the Berlin Wall 60 years ago.

On August 13, 1961, police officers and soldiers of the National People’s Army sealed off the last border crossings between the GDR and the Federal Republic – then the construction of the Wall in Berlin began, which until November 9, 1989 over a length of 43.1 kilometers, the current capital in East Germany and West shared.

The mourning flag is mandatory for all office buildings that are subject to the supervision of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. These include the town hall and police and judiciary buildings.
