Health insurance contributions will increase next year, and the Minister of Health has also recognized this. A certain group of insured people is particularly heavily burdened.

Munich – Many health insurance companies will also have to adjust their contributions upwards in the coming year. The Federal Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach (SPD), recently announced this. At the beginning of September he said Stern: “We will probably see an increase in the contribution rate.” This is due, among other things, to his hospital reform, which involves those paying contributions in financing the reform.

But budgets have become tight not only in the statutory health insurance funds. Most private health insurance companies also want to increase their premiums in 2025. That’s what she reports Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ). Accordingly, price increases of 30 percent will be “not uncommon”.

Premiums for private health insurance will rise significantly in 2025

According to the PKV Association in the SZ The premiums for insured people will rise by an average of 18 percent, and two thirds of private health insurance companies will increase their prices. Very few will not make adjustments, it continues. The increases will take effect either January 1st or April 1st, 2025.

The reason given for the steep price increases is the increased expenses, particularly for hospital stays. This is also due to the better wages for care, which will receive a better tariff in 2023. But the costs of outpatient care have also increased.

Those with private health insurance face significantly higher premiums. What it will look like in detail will only become clear in the fall, when the insured will be informed about the increased prices. To get a feeling, we have calculated what a cost increase of 18, 20 or even 30 percent would mean. Since the premiums in private insurance depend on Healthage and performance level can vary greatly, the invoice is only to be understood as an overview:

350 Euros+63 = 413 Euros+70 = 420 Euros+105 = 455 Euros450 Euros+81 = 531 Euros+90 = 540 Euros+135 = 585 Euros500 Euros+90 = 590 Euros+100 = 600 Euros+150 = 650 Euros600 Euros+108 = 708 Euros+120 = 720 Euros+180 = 780 Euros750 Euros+135 = 885 Euros+150 = 900 Euros+225 = 975 Euros900 Euros+162 = 1,062 Euros+180 = 1,080 Euros+270 = 1,170 Euros

The employer also covers half of the contributions in private health insurance up to a limit of 421.76 euros.

Who can get private insurance in Germany?

Over 50 percent of those insured by private health insurance are civil servants. As an employer, the state contributes to the costs of private health insurance through a subsidy. Civil servants are generally exempt from social security contributions, so private insurance is usually cheaper for them than statutory health insurance.

Self-employed people and employees are also allowed to take out private insurance. However, the private fund is only accessible to high-earning employees. The limit from which you can take out private insurance in 2025 is 73,800 euros per year.

Statutory health insurance companies will also increase contributions in 2025

In 2025, many statutory health insurance companies will also increase their contributions. At the beginning of September, the central association GKV warned that on average the health insurance companies would have to increase their contributions by 0.6 percentage points. If the contribution increased by 0.6 percentage points, an employee with a gross monthly salary of 3,000 euros would have to pay nine euros more to the health insurance company. At 5000 euros it would be 15 euros more. If the contribution increased by one percentage point, it would be correspondingly more, namely 15 euros more for 3,000 euros gross and 25 euros more for 5,000 euros gross.

But it’s not just the health insurance companies that are in a bad financial situation. Nursing care insurance expects red numbers for 2024 and 2025. Next year, this would mathematically require a premium increase of 0.2 points, according to the umbrella association of statutory health insurance companies, which also represents the nursing care funds.
