For the treatment of its employees, New York sued Amazon

The attorney general of New York, Letitia James, sued Amazon due to negligence in protecting their employees during the coronavirus pandemic and for retaliating against those who expressed concern, the local prosecutor’s office reported Wednesday.

James claimed that Amazon violated New York state labor laws and accused the company of “firing and punishing” employees who objected to working conditions imposed during the pandemic.

“While Amazon and its President made billions during this crisis, workers were forced to endure unsafe conditions and suffered retaliation for expressing these concerns,” James said in a statement reproduced by AFP.

The attorney general maintained that since last March “it is clear that Amazon placed more value on profits than on people and failed to guarantee the health and safety of its workers,” and regretted that they are “the worst treated.”

In anticipation of James’ lawsuit, Amazon filed a lawsuit against the attorney general on Friday, accusing her of disregarding information the company provided about the treatment of employees during the pandemic and subjecting the group to a kind of blackmail. .

For their part, Amazon employees demonstrated several times in front of one of the company’s warehouses, in the Staten Island district, in New York, criticizing the management for not having sufficiently protected them against the coronavirus.

Amazon claimed, then, to have done more than necessary to limit the risks of contagion, establishing distance between employees and tripling the frequency of cleaning the premises.

At the end of April, James sent a letter to the company after determining that the protective measures were “inadequate”.

The prosecutor demanded a series of concessions from the company and said it would sue Amazon in court if it did not comply with them, and this is what it did this Wednesday.

James demanded, among other things, that he redistribute more of his earnings, subsidize public transportation for employees, and lower their work rates and performance indicators.

The prosecutor indicated that the investigation will continue, and reserved the possibility of later going to a judge.

Amazon claims to have proposed these subsidies, but claims that it met with the refusal of the New York transportation authorities. They also said they reduced the pace of work given the limitations of the pandemic.
