President French Emmanuel Macronwants to come to Qatar to support his pride team, France, to face Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, at Lusail Stadium, on Thursday (12/15) evening local time.
Macron’s plan was broadcast by French sports minister Amelia Oudea-Castera on French radio Franceinfo, as quoted by Reuters.
“The details of the itinerary (to Qatar) will be further agreed, but he (Macron) is committed (to come),” Oudea-Castera said.
The French presidential office said last month that Macron was looking forward to the Les Bleus team advancing to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
Morocco managed to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Morocco after beating Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals on Saturday (10/12). The Atlas Lions squad became the first African team to make it to the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Earlier, Morocco’s success at the World Cup thrilled Arab countries, including even Algerian citizens who, incidentally, are neighboring countries who are currently at war over borders.
An Algerian resident, Mehdi Belkassam, has admitted he will still support Morocco at the 2022 World Cup.
“I feel I have to support Morocco, my Muslim neighbours, brothers and fellow Muslims,” said Belkassam, who is a kebab seller in Algiers.
Similarly, Miloud Mohamed, who works as a taxi driver in Algeirs, the capital of Algeria, will support Morocco.
“If we focus on politics, Morocco is an enemy because it has chosen Israel as a friend. But football is not politics. That’s why we support Morocco at the World Cup,” said Algerian Miloud Mohammed.
Mohamed will also fully support the Moroccan national team against France in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup. He also feels that Morocco and Algeria share the same fate because they were once colonized by France.
