In connection with the publicized open threats made by the member of the Council for Electronic Media – Ms. Bettina Zoteva, to the journalist Kudrinka Kudrinova, in response to a question, “Union of Publishers in Bulgaria” defines this behavior as extremely unacceptable and expresses its categorical position in defense of freedom of speech and the right of journalists to ask questions.
The “journalistic question” clarifies public relations, looks for motives, exposes connections, confirms or refutes facts, and is also a public tool for controlling decision-makers.
Threats to journalists are always directed against freedom of information, and when uttered by a member of the independent regulator of media services, they are a form of institutional pressure and affect the resistance of the public environment, turning the unacceptable into the rule.
“Union of Publishers in Bulgaria” declares itself categorically in defense of journalistic work and free access to information, ensuring public interest, a transparent public environment and the informed choice of citizens.
We believe that in the context of the professional activity of public figures, uncomfortable questions do not exist, and attempts at disinformation should be resisted with the force of arguments. As persons professionally engaged in gathering and disseminating information, journalists deserve respect and support.
We expect the members of the media regulator to live up to the public authority and professional recognition that have given them this responsible role by protecting, not hindering, the work of the media.
