FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE BAN ON MSM GIVING BLOOD
published on May 23, 2022
Next week, the federal parliament will vote on a new bill concerning blood donation and the exclusion of men who have sex with men.
With Thatvaria, Prism Federation, Wel Jong and RainbowHouse Brussels, we have been following this debate for a long time.
We are happy that this exclusion and the stigma that accompanies it are back on the political agenda.
Unfortunately, the new bill does not go far enough. In this proposal, the exclusion which is currently 12 months is shortened to 4 months for MSM.
However, this is a purely symbolic measure. The bill clings to the idea that a single group of people would pose a risk to the safety of blood donation.
This is false. We demand a law that removes sexual orientation as a risk factor, a law that focuses on individual risk behavior regardless of sexual orientation, like many neighboring countries.
That’s why we’re asking you to sign and share our joint petition. This will allow us to show the federal government that we finally want to put an end to this form of discrimination.
