/ world today news/ Not only Vezhdi Rashidov, but half of Bulgaria must resign! Because in the minister’s statement that gays are “the most unpleasant class”, half of the Bulgarians would probably recognize themselves.
Vezhdi Rashidov looks suspiciously like many of the people whose culture he leads, Deutsche Welle wrote in a commentary today. He comes out as a homophobe, but no democrats stand against him either. When he says that gays are “the most unpleasant class, because they are a combination of the worst qualities of a woman and the lowest qualities of a man”, about half of Bulgaria would probably recognize themselves in this statement. in the position of the poor minister, forced both to deny and not to deny that he had said just that.
Rashidov, the carpenter
Not that an express study was done, it wasn’t. But there is another study – by the European Agency for the Protection of Fundamental Human Rights from two and a half years ago. It is clear from it that Bulgaria is among those countries in the EU that are the most intolerant towards people of different sexual orientation, where the vast majority do not want to have gays as neighbors, 42% do not want to have gays as friends, and 47% they would not accept their own child’s homosexuality.
Vezhdi Rashidov is an adequate spokesman for this multitude. But in this dramatic fact one can see not a dead end, but on the contrary – a chance. If the minister loses his post because of this very statement, it will be the first sign in history that the Bulgarian administration has no intention of promoting homophobia and does not accept being represented by people with such views.
In short – this would mean that for the first time in 20 years, homophobia is recognized as a manifestation, evaluated negatively and rejected. Thanks to Rashidov’s extreme carpenter’s speech, the colossal chance for such a message fell precisely on this government. So far, there is no evidence that it will be able to notice it.
Homophobia in the public environment has accompanied the Bulgarian transition from the very beginning – since the time when the most popular print publications harnessed their linguistic fantasy against the government of Filip Dimitrov. The situation was repeated in a hundred times weaker version, but it still happened five years ago – then Stanishev’s government began to define itself as “gay”, adding an offensive tone to the word.
To hate is prestigious!
Along with political qualifications, jokes and gossip about “pedals” abounded, homophobia turned out to be a way to increase your TV ratings or even build a coherent political image. In many circles, hating “pedals” became as prestigious as hating ” the braziers”.
The Bulgarian press has already wasted its chance to stop the growth of this hatred – on the contrary, it encouraged it in many cases, first through its own publications, and then through the circulation of homophobic messages in its forums. Now the chance remains for the politicians. By the way, for their honor, we should remember that of all the groups in Bulgaria, they have the least contribution in creating this hatred.
