For the new constitution, more than 800 amendments were proposed to the parliament

We know a little more about the progress of the work of the assembly called by the president of the movement to examine the draft of the new Gabonese constitution. After hearing intelligence, members of the government and other resource people, parliamentarians met in plenary from September 18 to 21 to decide what to keep from this draft text.

At the end of the debates, more than 800 amendments were adopted under the leadership of the leaders of two chambers of parliament, the honorable Jean-François Ndongou and the honorable Paulette Missambo.

Sent to the president of the movement by the national constitutional committee on August 31, this draft constitution was written on the basis of the recommendations of the inclusive national dialogue organized north of Libreville from April 2 to 30, 2024.

In this bill, it is stated that Gabon is moving to a presidential system by abolishing the office of the Prime Minister. And to apply for the Presidency of the Republic, it is announced that only Gabonese citizens of parents born in Gabonese can now claim this high office, and at the same time this reform project establishing the financial autonomy of the three jurisdictional orders. and reforming the independence of the judiciary.

In particular, the President of the Republic will be elected by a single-member ballot in two rounds if there is no equality of votes in the first round, and he will use a mandate of seven years renewable once.

However, after its adoption in parliament, this bill will be submitted to a referendum next December, according to the timetable published by the Committee for the Transition and Renewal of Institutions (CTRI ).
