For the first time since September day without reported corona deaths in nursing home | NOW

It seems that last Thursday (April 8) not a single nursing home resident in the Netherlands died from the consequences of the corona virus. That would be the first time since September last year, the RIVM confirms after questions from NU.nl.

Not every corona death occurs that same day in the statistics of the RIVM, because there is a delay in the transmission of reports from the nursing homes.

The RIVM therefore uses an uncertainty margin of seven days in the corona statistics. After that period, no more reports are usually received, although that possibility always remains.

Incidentally, this does not mean that almost no nursing home residents die from the effects of the virus: last Friday, three more deaths were reported, a day later (April 10) this number dropped to two again.

Vaccination in nursing homes leads to falling corona numbers

The RIVM emphasizes that the daily figures in themselves do not say very much, but that the figure does endorse the downward trend seen in nursing homes. The number of infections and deaths in nursing homes has been decreasing for some time now, and that is related to the vaccination campaign, according to the RIVM. “Good news,” said the spokesman.

The Netherlands started injecting nursing home residents in January, and almost all residents who want this have now been vaccinated. This is reflected in the figures: at the moment, an average of a few corona-related deaths are reported per day, compared to an average of more than 55 deaths per day at the end of last year.

The last time no corona-related deaths in nursing homes were reported in one day was on September 15, 2020.
