For the first time presence of plastic particles in human blood found

The investigation is today published in the scientific journal Environmental International. Blood tests found so-called microplastics in 17 of the 22 test subjects.

Breakthrough

Microplastics are worn pieces of plastic from, for example, packaging materials. “This study is a breakthrough”, says emeritus professor Martin van den Berg of Utrecht University in the Volkskrant.

According to the researcher, this is real evidence that there is plastic in our blood.

Harmful?

According to the researchers, it is not yet possible to say whether the microplastics in the blood are harmful. The current research only shows that people apparently ingest so much plastic that it can be found in the bloodstream.
