A long-awaited event was celebrated in the Zoo in Stara Zagora – for the first time in its history, a griffon vulture hatched. The two families of birds of prey – Belcho and Sanie and Shandin and Aylen each had one egg, given for careful rearing by the specialists of the “Green Balkans” Rescue Center.
“After staying in an incubator, one of the eggs cracked and the beak handed over the little bird. This is a huge success”, report the teams of the zoo and the rescue center. They are adamant that mutual efforts are the basis, as well as the care for nature and the preservation of biodiversity. With the hatching of the little chick, the Zoo becomes part of the large international family of friends of this attractive bird species who have donated specimens to the cause. After the vulture has grown enough and the period of adaptation with its parents has passed, it will be released to fly freely in the sky of Bulgaria.
There are strong expectations that the generation of griffon vultures will increase with another newly hatched. LIFE of the EU. The zoo team monitors their behavior with particular attention during this predisposing breeding period.
In Bulgaria, the impressive-looking birds are a protected species. The specimens weigh between 7 and 11 kg, and their wingspan reaches an impressive 260-270 cm. Females, as with most birds of prey, are larger than males.
