The Swedish parliament elected Magdalen Andesson, the leader of the Social Democrats and the current finance minister, as prime minister on Wednesday, with the politician reaching a last-minute agreement with decisive support.
In the vote, 117 legislators voted in favor, 57 abstained and 174 voted against. Under the Swedish system, a candidate for prime minister does not need to have a majority in parliament, but it is enough that the majority is not against him.
Andesson is the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Sweden.
She replaces Stephan Leven, who recently resigned as Social Democrat leader.
