“I promised a surprise, and now it’s no longer a secret: for the first time in 311 years, the original of the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk will enter the Ukrainian state. We are returning Ukraine to Ukraine. Cossack power, the Ukrainian People’s Republic to this day, “- said the minister.
According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine appealed to Sweden with a request to provide the original of the Latin-language version of Orlik’s Constitution on behalf of the head of state Volodymyr Zelensky.
“These were very difficult negotiations, we were offered a copy, but we only wanted the original, which had never been in Ukraine. And therefore, I am especially grateful to Sweden for showing real solidarity with Ukraine and mutual readiness to further develop millennial ties between our peoples,” – noted Kuleba.
He also added that the hetman’s mace, which, according to legend, after hetman Ivan Mazepa belonged to Orlik, will be on temporary display in Ukraine.
Pylyp Orlik (1672-1742) – Ukrainian hetman. In 1710 he compiled the “Covenants and Constitutions of the Rights and Liberties of the Zaporozhian Army”. This document is called the first Ukrainian Constitution and one of the first constitutions in Europe.
On August 24, 2021, Ukraine will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the country’s independence.
