Britain reported 106,122 newly infected with KOVID-19 today, exceeding the threshold of 100,000 daily cases for the first time since widespread testing was introduced, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
The rapid spread of the Omicron variant has led to an increase in those infected in the past seven days, with the total number increasing by 59 percent, or 643,219 cases, government figures show. 90,629 infected people were registered yesterday.
Many industries are affected by staff shortages as sick workers isolate themselves and hospitals warn of dangers to patient safety.
The government said today that it was shortening the period of self-isolation due to KOVID-19 from ten to seven days for people in England who showed a negative result in a quick test on two consecutive days.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday ruled out the possibility of new restrictions before Christmas. However, he did not rule out the possibility of additional measures after the holiday if the situation worsens.
The total number of patients with KOVID-19 in hospital was 8,008 – a slight increase in the last seven days, but well below the level of over 38,000 in January.
The number of reported deaths 28 days after the test was positive was 140, down from 172 on the previous day.
