For the first time, a genomic evaluation of young cattle is supported – 2024-10-20 07:03:00

At the exhibition in Sliven, selection and breeding activities in animal husbandry were presented

The Ministry of Agriculture continues to upgrade the support for breeding activity and selection in the “Livestock” sector. This was said by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Assoc. Deyan Stratev during the opening of the “Day of the Bulgarian Producer” exhibition, which is being held in Sliven. He informed that the third program period is currently active, during which the activity of the breeding organizations is supported. This becomes possible through State aid for creating and maintaining a pedigree book and for determining the productivity and genetic qualities of animals. The Deputy Minister recalled that in May the aid was re-notified for implementation until 2029, with the amount for this year being BGN 9 million, and for the first time, it also included performing a genomic evaluation of young breeding animals from commercial breeds cattle. “This is a genetic analysis that allows for better planning and selection of animals, and by the end of the year, nearly 7,600 animals will be analyzed,” he added.

During the event, livestock breeders, breeders and farmers presented the results of the work done, aimed at preserving the biological diversity existing in our country, improving the breeds and extracting quality raw materials and products. In this regard, Deputy Minister Stratev specified that in our country there are 54 breeding organizations from various fields. “Bulgaria is a country with well-established traditions in the development of animal husbandry, but in order for it to be competitive, it is necessary to apply innovative technologies in production,” he categorically stated. According to him, it is important to continue with the purposeful breeding activity, to take strict care of animal health and the environment and to work in sync with European policies for the sector.

Deputy Minister Dr. Miroslav Marinov was also present at the event. The two deputy ministers presented awards to some of the most elite breeds, such as the Black-colored breed of cattle and bulls of the Wagu and Highland breeds, awarded in a competition.

During the forum, the “Cattle breeding” sector was represented by over 150 animals. Nine more breeds of horses and rabbits were included in the exhibition. Part of the event is also a farmer’s market, where meat, dairy and bee products were presented.

The event was also attended by the mayor of Sliven Stefan Radev, representatives of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Executive Director of the Executive Agency for Selection and Reproduction in Animal Husbandry Eng. Georgi Yordanov and branch organizations from the Animal Husbandry sector.
