For the first time a documentary won the Berlinale

The documentary “Sur l’Adamant” won the grand prize at the Berlin Film Festival “Berlinale”. In it, director Nicolas Philibert describes life in the day care center of a Paris psychiatric clinic. The building is located on one bank of the Seine and is a unique floating structure.

When the jury announces the winning film, a surprised Philibert exclaims: “Are you normal?”. And he continues by saying that for 40 years he worked for documentary cinema to be recognized on an equal footing with artistic cinema, the world agencies reported. The film was shot for three years, the director wanted to show what kind of people patients are, who are usually stigmatized.

The Berlinale is the second major international festival to award its main prize to a documentary film in the last year. All Beauty and Bloodshed by Laura Poitras won the Golden Lion in Venice in September 2022.

The “Berlinale” award for the best acting performance in a leading role this year went to a child – Sofia Otero. In the Spanish film 20,000 species of bees, she played an 8-year-old child searching for her gender identity. Otero is the youngest laureate in the history of the Berlin International Film Festival, DPA reported, BTA reported. The grand prize of the jury went to “Red Sky” by German director Christian Petzold. Angela Shanelec won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay for her production of Music. The French Philippe Garrel was awarded the “Silver Bear” for the best director for the film “The Great Chariot”.
