For the Day of the Dead, Sectur estimates an economic impact of 25,605 million pesos

Mexico City. For the celebration of the Day of the Dead, between Friday, November 1 and Sunday, November 3, the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) estimates a total economic impact of 25,605 million pesos.

The federal agency indicated that a benefit of nearly 2,048 million is expected for lodging alone, but adding consumption in other tourist services gives the aforementioned total.

Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, head of Sectur, indicated that the displacement of 3 million 127 thousand tourists is anticipated in this period, as well as a hotel occupancy of 63.8 percent, which represents an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the same period. of 2023, which was 63.4 percent.

Sectur estimated the arrival of one million 232 thousand tourists to hotels, of which 958 thousand are national and 274 thousand international, which in total represents an increase of 4.3 percent compared to 2023.

In addition, he indicated, 2 million 290 thousand national tourists will stay in other modalities, such as houses of family and friends or second homes.

Rodríguez Zamora said that the highest occupancy will be in Oaxaca, with 83.4 percent; Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, with 82.0 percent; Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, with 81.2 percent; Cancún, Quintana Roo, with 81.1 percent; Mazatlán, Sinaloa, with 81.1 percent; and Mexico City, with 76.0 percent.

Additionally, in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, an occupancy rate of 79.6 percent is expected; Mérida, Yucatán, with 78.7 percent; Morelia, Michoacán, 74.4 percent; and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, with 74.3 percent.

The head of Sectur highlighted that the Day of the Dead celebration “is an invaluable opportunity to bring tourists closer to all communities, especially indigenous peoples, thus allowing the benefits of tourist activity to reach all Mexican people.”

He recalled that, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico City, in the context of the celebration of the Day of the Dead Parade, the arrival of tourists to hotels in Mexico City is expected to be 155,317. tourists, 5 percent more than in 2023, with a spill of 1,329 million pesos in tourist services.
