For Stroke Patients, Beware of Swallowing Disorders, The Impact Can Be Dangerous

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is reduced due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or rupture of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

Without blood flow, the brain will not get oxygen and nutrients. As a result, cells in the affected brain area can die.

Damaged areas of the brain can cause parts of the body to not function properly. On the other hand, stroke may cause disturbance swallow.

This was revealed by speech therapist Mutiara Sari S Tr Kes. This occurs because it occurs due to impaired blood flow to the brain stem.

According to Mutiara’s explanation, if there is a swallowing disorder, there will be a very dangerous impact. One of them is aspiration.

Aspiration is a condition in which food enters the airways. Basically, everyone has two valves in the throat. The first valve is for feeding and the second valve is for the airway.

“If there’s a disturbance swallow food can enter the respiratory tract. Patient stroke choking, coughing can also create inflammation of the lungs (pneumonia). It can lead to death due to obstruction of the airway,” he said.

But Mutiara added that there are many cases of patients stroke don’t have a cough aspirations. This needs to be suspected, there may be a silent aspirations.

This is because the body cannot eat food due to swallowing disorders. It can also cause dehydration or lack of fluids.

If it is from a neurologist, it will usually be recommended for another examination involving a rehabilitation doctor. And from there apply for a speech therapist.
