For parties, 7 thousand 354 million pesos in 2025 for ordinary expenses

Next year, the budget for national political parties will be 7 billion 354 million 266 thousand 504 pesos for ordinary activities, according to the project approved unanimously by the Commission of Prerogatives and Political Parties of the National Electoral Institute (INE), whose ratification is expected on Friday at the general council of the body.

The councillors have no room for manoeuvre on the issue because this public funding is specified in the Constitution based on a formula applied based on the size of the electoral register, which currently stands at 99.2 million people.

That is to say, the parties are guaranteed this subsidy, which in this sense is free of any financial implications, except that the current value of the UMA is included in the calculation, and it constitutes their main resource from which they even pay fines for electoral violations.

Last year, the budget for public financing of the seven parties was almost 10 billion: 6.609 billion for ordinary expenses and 3.304 billion for campaign expenses.

The base amount to be distributed will therefore increase by 745 million. Furthermore, despite technological advances throughout the country, the parties will have –together– 140.7 million for telegraphic and postal communications.

Once the electoral process is concluded and positions in Congress are confirmed – which will occur within a week at the latest – it will be known among how many parties the money will be distributed, although for now it seems that the PRD will lose its registration.

According to the document approved last night in commission, for the 2025 fiscal year, of the 7 thousand 354.2 million pesos referred to, 7 thousand 3.4 are for the maintenance of permanent ordinary activities210.1 million for specific activities140 million for the concept of postal franchise and 693 thousand 492 pesos of telegraphic franking.

Uuc-kib Espadas, president of the commission in question, stated that the allocation of resources to parties, “an issue that is now dealt with routinely, was one of the great achievements of the democratic struggles of the late twentieth century. Based on providing minimum guarantees of financial resources to the parties, it has significantly reduced economic inequality in electoral contests.

“In our country, it is inconceivable,” the councillor added, “to have democratic electoral processes in which the contenders do not have guaranteed minimum bases for carrying out their ordinary tasks of access to citizenship.”

He therefore welcomed the measures approved and asked that the origin of these measures not be forgotten, in a society that fervently desired a full electoral democracy.

I am pleased that public funding for political parties remains in force today in amounts that are sufficient for them to prevail over any private funding.he stressed.
