Joachim Löw, the German coach who is leaving his post after 15 years of elimination in the round of 16 against England, believes that the Mannschaft lacked “composure and maturity”.

How do you cope with this elimination?

“It’s difficult to analyze, it’s above all a huge disappointment, we had hoped for better, we had faith in this team. In this type of match, it is important to realize the few opportunities that we create. Thomas Müller and Timo Werner had two, they didn’t score. But you can’t blame anyone. In the locker room there is a dead silence, all the players are terribly disappointed, and me too. We felt from the start of the match that it could be a game of patience. Neither team wanted to indulge too much, we had to expect that there would be few chances. The English scored, I believe, on their first opportunity. If Thomas (Müller) had scored his, we would go back to 1-1. We lacked the composure in front of the goal, the experience in certain situations, the maturity at times. The quality is there, the mind, the state of mind, but we did not know how to be consistent until the end, we were punished ”.

What do you remember from 15 years on the Mannschaft bench?

“Lots of positive things. I started as an assistant at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, then the World title in 2014, then the 2017 Confederations Cup with a young team. After 2018 (elimination in the first round of the World Cup editor’s note) we went through difficult times, but despite the difficulties these three years have taught me a lot. What will remain above all are all these moments with people, regardless of victories or defeats, people with whom I have forged strong bonds, lived unforgettable moments, and who have become very important in my life, players, my staff. The disappointment of this Euro will remain for a while, we cannot digest it in a few days, but I am sure that over time I will have many positive memories. ”

Löw talks about his future … and that of the Mannschaft

“We have young players who will learn from this experience. They will progress strongly in the next two or three years, and Euro-2024 (in Germany) will be the peak of their careers. We can expect great things from them. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are already leaders in this team, they are able to lead it in the years to come. For me, I haven’t made any decision yet. After 15 years of responsibilities, it will do me good to relax a bit, and a new energy will come. But at the moment I don’t have a concrete plan. I’m not talking about retirement, I just need to take an emotional break, to take a step back, I’m going to need this time, but then there will definitely be some interesting things for me ”.
