For Florence Parly, the vaccination of sailors from Charles-de-Gaulle is “one more precaution”

During her visit to Toulon this Friday, January 22, Florence Parly, Minister of the Armed Forces, returned to the vaccination campaign underway for the 2,400 sailors of the aircraft carrier _Charles-de-Gaulle_, and the ships that make up its escort. The first injections took place this Thursday at the Sainte-Anne Army Instruction Hospital in Toulon and at the HIA Clermont Tonnerre of Brest.

The carrier strike group is due to leave Toulon in mid-February for an operational mission lasting several months, notably against Daesh, in the Mediterranean and in the Indian Ocean.

Departure after the second injection

At the microphone of France Bleu Provence, the Minister of the Armed Forces explains that “this vaccination campaign is natural and obvious because the Charles-de-Gaulle will navigate in areas where there is no no possibility of medical evacuation or if these possibilities exist they can be counted in days. However, we know that we must evacuate the sick quickly. Vaccination does not exempt from respecting the barrier gestures on board. It is an additional precaution “. Before adding that the aircraft carrier would leave Toulon “after the second injection of the vaccine” to sailors, normally mid-February.

Thursday evening, the Ministry of the Armed Forces had also explained that the 2,400 sailors would, during their mission, make several stopovers. The French Navy therefore wants to avoid “that the sailors are contaminated on land or that they contaminate inhabitants”. The Armies do not want to relive the episode of last spring, where, after a stopover in Brest, 1,080 of the 2,400 GAN sailors had been infected by Covid-19. The aircraft carrier must have rushed back to Toulon.
