“For Development / For!”: The government needs to develop a modern tax regime for the self-employed

November 9, 2020

Information prepared by Lāsma Bindere, “For Development / About!” Head of Saeima faction communication.

The government needs to develop a modern tax regime for the self-employed, according to the party association “For Development / Par!” (AP!).

“All Latvians must be socially protected and equal in health care. This principle is reflected in the changes in the law together with next year’s budget. However, they are not yet in line with the modern economy, where more and more people are self-employed and work in several places and jobs,” says AP. co-chair Juris Pūce.

“Latvia needs a humane, understandable and modern tax regime for the self-employed. Not one that has been patched for a long time. It must correspond to the world of work in the 21st century, in which self-employed professionals are playing an increasing role,” says AP! co-chair Daniels Pavļuts.

AP! considers that even before the approval of next year’s budget in the Saeima, it is necessary to eliminate several significant shortcomings in the draft laws.

1. Low-income people and social workers should not be humiliated. And social workers do not have to become tax inspectors.

2. It must be possible for self-employed persons to choose a longer accounting period than the three months currently specified in the draft law.

3. The minimum level of social security contributions for the following year shall be maintained for a further two years.

4. The government should develop a conceptually new, modern tax regulation for the self-employed and new entrepreneurs by the middle of next year.
