For a while the highway is Feline’s playground (2) | peasant protest

Feline looks around a bit awkwardly. A traffic jam of tractors, trucks and cars on one side of the A37 at the Drentse Zwartemeer. And on the other side nothing but emptiness behind the girl of 2. There she is, in the middle of the left lane of the highway. “As a 2-year-old you don’t get the chance to experience something like this.”

Grandmother Monique Breukers from Klazienaveen – ‘we don’t have a farm but stand behind the farmers’ – is the proud owner of some special photos of the young sprout. She tells on the phone that a former colleague of her husband was stuck in his truck behind a farmers protest on the A37, less than ten minutes from their home. So they hopped in the car to see the spectacle. Granddaughter Feline went along. “We parked the car on a peat road along the highway and walked onto the asphalt.”

There the couple encountered farmers who were blocking the highway from the German border to Hoogeveen with their agricultural vehicles. Resulting in a long queue. ,,The atmosphere was friendly”, Monique describes. “There was music. Feline danced a bit and I think she had a good time.”

Pink pacifier

And then followed a real photo session in the middle of the highway. To her right, the girl has placed her drinking bottle on the asphalt, pink and blue, the straw sticking out. Furthermore, a pink pacifier in her mouth and the reddish hair nice and wild. The press photographer’s device flashed: Feline looking around in close-up, one from a little further away and Feline crawling away. The proud mother-in-law now has three photos to print out and hang on the wall.

“These are nice photos. As a 2-year-old you don’t get the chance to experience something like this, alone and sitting on a highway,” says her grandmother. “I don’t think she understands much about it,” she refers to the farmers’ protests against the cabinet’s nitrogen plans.
