For 324,000 euros traffic violations in less than three years at De Lijn: how much drivers pay themselves depends on their province | Inland

If you aspire to a career as a bus driver, it is best to think about in which province he or she does that – especially if you have a heavy foot. An Antwerp De Lijn driver has to pay only 18% of a traffic fine himself, while a bus driver from Limburg has to pay 42% out of his own pocket. This is apparent from new figures that Flemish MP Bert Maertens (N-VA) requested from Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters (Open VLD).

Yesterday a national day of action at De Lijn caused a lot of nuisance:

From the beginning of 2019 to the first 9 months of 2021, De Lijn drivers collected 4,950 fines for a total amount of 324,038 euros. Drivers from Flemish Brabant incur the most fines, while West Flemish buses are the safest.

It is noticeable that it differs from province to province how much the driver in question has to pay out of his own pocket. An Antwerp resident and a West Fleming only have to pay 18% and 19% of the fine themselves. A colleague from Limburg has to dock 42% himself. In Flemish Brabant and East Flanders this is 37% and 24% respectively. That also depends on the type of offense and whether it is a recidivism case.
