Como Mayor Mario Landrishina called on all residents of the popular Italian city to attend the funeral of his 70-year-old compatriot, whose lifeless body remained in the dining room of her home for more than two years, TGC 24 reported.
Marinela Beretta’s body was found on February 4 in an advanced stage of decomposition of a chair in the dining room of her house on the outskirts of Como. The woman lived alone, had no children or other relatives. Residents say they last saw her in September 2019. Since then, no one has looked for her or wondered why her mailbox is overflowing.
According to the woman’s neighbors, she had another home in the Liguria region and they thought she had gone there in the autumn of 2019, and then, when the pandemic broke out and the lockdown began, she decided not to return.
The finding of Marinela’s body came about quite by accident, the Telegraph clarifies. During a storm last week, a tree branch broke off in the yard of her house, fell outside the fence and blocked the road. After clearing the road, Marinela’s neighbors noticed that other trees on her property also needed pruning or felling. They signaled to the municipality and a search began for the owner of the property.
During the inspection it was found that Marinela had sold her house to a Swiss man. However, the two agreed that she would stay in it for the rest of her life, and the Swiss would pay her monthly installments of the sale amount. The new owner regularly transferred money to Marinela’s account, but did not check to see if anyone was withdrawing it at all.
It was only when he was searched for the condition of the trees in the property that he began trying to contact Marinela, and when he failed, he reported it to the police, leading to the ominous find. According to the first data from the investigation, the death of the woman was not violent. It is alleged that she suddenly felt unwell and could not even reach for the phone and seek help.
The case shocked Italy and sparked a number of comments from journalists and analysts. And the Republika newspaper reported that in the Lombardy region of northern Italy alone, 100,000 elderly people are in the Marinela situation, living in complete loneliness and if something happens to them, perhaps in their case no one will notice. .
